About Me
Who are you?
I am an evil and cranky computational biologist/research programmer.
Wait, why evil?
It is a pun from my times as a pre-college mentor at Universidad Metropolitana. Our group, The Applied Science and Math Group, developed The Evil Toolbox for Matlab. Thus, the evil pun.
And cranky?
Because John C. Dvorak is the cranky “par excellence” and I strive to be more like him.
Okay… and computational biologist?
Because I do things with living tissue and computers.
So the research programmer is because you use computers?
Kind of. High-throughput technologies have allowed scientists to gather huge amounts of data and thus, computational biologists among other computational scientists, have the task of analyzing it. That is what I strive for professionally.
Makes sense, but why a blog?
Because I can. And I wanted to refresh my {L,W,M}AMP skills. I also need a public place to rant about music, news and technology among other things.
There are so many blogs out there, one more won’t hurt. So, what are your interests?
I have personal and professional interests in research programming that involves location proteomics, machine learning, pattern recognition, image processing, web technologies as well as education in computer science and mathematics. Mainly, I am curious to what extent web technologies can be expanded in order to provide services that will aid scientists to perform experiments online, access data from other services to aid their web-based experiments as well communicating their results using XML and other web-based applications. In past I have worked as a research programmer, math and stats substitute teache, pre-college mentor, college tutor and teaching assistant as well as college lecturer. All of these teaching experiences have fueled my desire to learn and teach science.
Okay. Now, could you explain your obsession with bacon?
It is not really an obsession. It is a gift of love. Austin Winters created a character named Bacon Boy while he was fighting leukemia. It is just a reminder of how we all have different ways of coping: mine were graham crackers. “[..] Bacon Boy’s Super Powers include shooting hot bacon grease out of his left hand, bacon bits out of his right and beaming meat vision with rays of corn dogs, sausage links and, as Austin often said…… ‘Really any meat product.’ Bacon Boy is in constant battle with his arch-nemesis Fry Guy. — a cast iron skillet on a flying skate board!” To learn more about Bacon Boy and how to help children like Austin click here.
Okay, so you are not crazy, just a little weird. Now, who is that Timmy that I keep reading about on your tweets?
Timmy is Lassie’s companion. I thought you knew. He is not tech-saavy, so he keeps asking for advice.
My bad, you are crazy. Last, who is Mr. D.?
My arch-nemesis: diabetes. As a person who lives with diabetes I am in a constant battle. Mr. D. thinks he can win, but I know better.
And Dapper Chewie?
All I can really say about him is that he is never amused. Never…
